J. Period & K'naan present THE MESSENGERS (digi EP)

New York, NY (August 18, 2009) – Some artists are defined by their environment. Some redefine their environment. Still others push the boundaries of convention so fully that their influence is felt around the globe, and across generations. Their music compels us not only to dance but to think, not only to celebrate but to strive, not only to listen but to truly hear. Fela Kuti, Nigeria’s eminent musical activist; Bob Marley, Jamaica’s emissary of struggle and unity; and Bob Dylan, America’s reluctant Civil Rights song leader, are three such artists.

These are “The Messengers.”

Today, August 18, 2009, acclaimed DJ/Producer, J.Period, and rising Somali-born MC, K’NAAN, are pleased to announce a unique and powerful remix project, paying tribute to the lasting legacy of these musical giants. Weaving afro-beat, reggae, ska, folk music and rock into this genre-bending musical experience, The Messengers stretches the boundaries of hip hop—and the mixtape genre itself. Remixing the classic work of Fela, Marley and Dylan, The Messengers captures the timelessness of their sounds and the continued urgency of their messages. The result, as fans have come to expect from J.Period, is like no mixtape you’ve ever heard.

The Messengers arrives on the heels of K'NAAN's sophomore release, Troubadour (A&M/Octone Records), released January 2009. Having already made a powerful mark with his breakthrough debut, K’NAAN’s Troubadour debuted at #32 on Billboard’s Top 200, continuing his rapid rise on the world stage. Filled with eloquent and thought-provoking lyrics in the tradition of great folk singers and protest songs, the album also features all-star collaborations with Damian Marley, Mos Def, Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Adam Levine & James Valentine (Maroon 5) and Chubb Rock.

With a track record for game-changing remix projects (his recent collaboration with Q-Tip yielded over 600,000 downloads), J.Period’s ever-expanding highlight reel boasts remixes for heavyweights from Mary J. Bilge to The Roots to Kanye West, as well as original production for blockbuster films and video games. Commissioned by labels, artists and lifestyle brands for his groundbreaking promo campaigns, J.Period has not only elevated the mixtape to an art form, but consistently proved its viability as a potent promotional tool. Each release raises the bar, and with The Messengers, J.Period proves that his musical ear and signature documentary style are at home in any genre

K’NAAN’s compelling personal story (raised in war-torn Mogadishu, descendant of famed Somali singers and poets) has also fueled his international appeal: bridging styles and audiences; re-invigorating hip hop’s global influence; and altering perception of his homeland, Somalia (recently hailed as the world’s “Most Dangerous Destination” by Forbes Magazine). In hip hop, where MCs wear bullet wounds like badges of honor, few have actually lived through war, and even fewer emerged with a message of peace. K’NAAN has, making his lyrics on “The Messengers” not just a tribute to Fela, Marley and Dylan, but a testament to the transformative power of music itself.

"This project is really special to me,” says K’NAAN, “Not the product of ego but of passion. Far from a marketing tool, it is an honest musical offering. Nothing gives a better window into the root and concept of my own sound than The Messengers"

“A lot of people say hip hop is in a stagnant place, but I see few actually doing something about it,” says J.Period. “I love the The Messengers because the concept is completely unique, but still true to the original spirit of hip hop: combining the best elements from everywhere to create something fresh, to make a new statement. Fela, Marley and Dylan proved that when great music meets a powerful message, the result lives forever. I hope K’NAAN and I have done their legacies justice with this project.”

After an Invitation-Only Launch Party in Toronto (K’NAAN’s current home) on August 15, The Messengers will be released in 5 parts over the course of 5 weeks, beginning with the first installment—a 3-song digital EP featuring one Fela remix, one Marley, and one Dylan—on Tuesday, August 18. Following the EP release, J.Period & K’NAAN will pay tribute to each of “The Messengers” individually with a new release every Tuesday in September, beginning with a tribute to Fela Kuti (September 1), Bob Marley (September 8), Bob Dylan (September 15), and culminating in the release of The Messengers in its entirety (including additional bonus tracks and artwork) on September 22.

Each digital release will also be accompanied by an exclusive illustration by graphic artist, Fuse Green (http://www.fusegreen.com), the tremendous talent behind J.Period’s iconic cover art (Q-Tip, Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Game Rebellion)

The Messengers boasts a lineup of talented guest artists from around the globe: New York’s M1 (Dead Prez), Toronto’s Kardinal Offishall, Sierra Leone's rising talent Bajah + Dry Eye Crew (http://planetbajah.com), Brooklyn’s Steele (Smif’N’Wessun), Oakland’s Zumbi (Zion I), Game Rebellion front man Netic the Rebel, bassist Brian Satz, talented producer DJ Preservation, and mixer/engineer, Alex Moulton (www.expansionteam.org).

Michael Jackson: Remix Suite 1 Download

Universal Motown Records has enlisted some of the hottest producers in the game to pay homage to Michael Jackson by remixing their favorite tracks from The Jackson 5’s timeless catalog of gems and jams. The Neptunes, Swizz Beatz,
Q-Tip,Benny Blanco, Ryan Leslie, and Rodney Jerkins are just a few of the producers who are featured on Michael Jackson:

The Remix Suites I-V. Boasting innovative renditions of popular hits such as “ABC” and “Dancing Machine,” along with obscure classics like “Maria” and “Skywriter,” Michael Jackson: The Remix Suites I-V is as diverse in sound as its dazzling array of notable producers.

The suites will be released in five digital bundles of five songs. The first bundle—featuring Polow Da Don, The Neptunes, Dallas Austin, Salaam Remi, and Stargate is available for digital purchase TODAY, followed by a new bundle every two weeks leading up to the physical release of the entire collection on October 27. We personally enjoyed Salaam Remi’s reggae remix of “ABC,” where he “imagined the Jackson’s taking a trip to Jamaica in the early ’70s with a Jamaican band playing behind them." Check out the stream below and click the "Read More" for the other four.

Jay Electronica x Mos Def "Exhibit A (Remix)

Mos Def and Jay Electronica's The Ecstatic Tour can't hit New York soon enough (I refuse to believe there's no NY stop). Two nights ago the tour swung by the House of Blues in Jay Elec's hometown, New Orleans. The fans were treated to a Mos Def x Jay Electronica collabo with this performance of the "Exhibit A" remix, not to be confused with "Exhibit B." We're still waiting on those full length CDQ's, and I hear that an "Exhibit C" is on the way too. As you know by now with these two, there's really no telling when those will drop, but you know they'll be fire when they do.

Soul Assassins feat. Cynic- "World We're In"

There are at least two bands called Soul Assassins:

1) Soul Assassins are a loose collective of musicians and graphic artists affiliated to the hiphop group Cypress Hill, formed in the early 90s. It is also the name of Cypress Hill’s publishing company.

In 1997 and 2000 two albums under the name Soul Assassins were released. Both albums featured an army of rappers and both were almost entirely produced by Cypress Hill’s beatsmith DJ Muggs, with minor contributions by The Alchemist (three songs) and DJ Khalil (one song) on the second volume.

Sandpeople - "Hate Aside"

Here's the official music video for Sandpeople's "Hate Aside" off their latest album "Long Story, Short EP", released May 26th on Sandpeople Music.

The song “Glory Days” that is attached to this page is not by the hip-hop crew Sandpeople that you are probably thinking of. It’s by some random dude. Wrongly grouped.

Sandpeople was formed roughly three-and-a-half years ago as an unlikely gathering of hip-hop artists in the Pacific Northwest. This crew has since built itself into a 12 member unit fully equipped to fill a stage and empty a keg (preferably in reverse order). Within the first two months, and long before most Sandpeeps had even met each other, their debut album Points of View was recorded and released over a two week span.

RIP DJ AM

Cops tell us DJ AM — also known as Adam Goldstein — was found dead this afternoon in New York City.

Law enforcement sources tell us he was found in his apartment at around 5:20 PM. We’re told drug paraphernalia was found at the scene. Sources tell TMZ prescription pill bottles were found by DJ AM’s body this afternoon.

We’re told DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days — one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door.

We’re told the friend called the police, who broke down the door and then found DJ AM’s body.

Back in September of 2008, DJ AM and Travis Barker survived a plane crash in South Carolina. Four people died in the crash — which was caused when the airplane aborted takeoff and then ran off the runway. DJ AM and Barker were the only survivors.

Blue Scholars Oof! EP

Everybody loves Hawaii. Few know better than Blue Scholars’ MC Geo, having grown up in Honolulu in the 1980’s and returning with the Scholars’ dj/ producer Sabzi last year to rock a sold-out homecoming show at Next Door. Love lingered in the air despite all the changes happening outside the sweaty, crackin’ club. “Development” has paved over lush lands and displaced longtime locals, the US military continues its stranglehold on the islands, and tourism runs tings (into the ground). By and by, the people maintain, and Blue Scholars bore witness to life beyond the beaches and resorts.

Oof! is the story about the Hawaii that you don’t see on TV: fish-fry BBQs in Waianae, native Hawaiians struggling for sovereignty, house parties on the Leeward side, uncles playing mah-jong on a lanai in Waipahu, a thriving independent hip-hop and fashion scene, on-air ciphers at KTUH, a room full of folks vibin’ to a mean reggae song, young poets spitting fire into mics, grubbing on poke in the Foodland parking lot, whole neighborhoods leveled by the ice epidemic.

Many “mainlanders” go to Hawaii to get away. Blue Scholars went to get it in. They returned again six months later with a New Year’s Eve show and a handful of new tracks inspired by the first visit, soon to be released in the form of their most collaborative multi-media project, yet: OoF! — a collaboration with painter, vinyl toy & skate deck artist, Angry Woebots who made a collaborative painting to go along with the song “HI-808” which will be turned into a limited edition print and t-shirt; one of Hawaii’s premier photographers and historian of all things dope Aaron Yoshino (Honozooloo / 5 to Life) who’s photos have documented Hawaii’s subculture for several years and who is creating the cover art of the EP; the influential Hawaii based surf & skate boutique brand IN4MATION where Angry Woebot’s painting was made; and the island’s premiere video production crew, Kai Media, who directed and shot the music video for the track Hi-808, shot in and around Oahu (edited by Zia Mohajerjasbi). All these groups have come together to create this project which will be sold as a complete package online using Topsin Media widgets at Blue Scholars’ and each project partners’ websites, with the EP being available separately at the usual digital retailers.

Anchoring the project is the OOF! EP featuring six new Blue Scholars tracks. The minimalism of the intro song “Bananas” yields to the familiar complex lyricism and production of “HI-808,” which documents the differences between the Hawaii Geo grew up in and the one he would later return to, laid over an 808-drum-dominated Sabzi masterpiece. “Hello” is a playful take on the escapism while “New People” is a truly original effort that almost treads dance music territory. “Cruz” is the duo’s ode to island life over a Jawaiian-reggae influenced beat. In addition to these tracks, all five instrumental versions will also be included, encouraging other artists to make their own songs with these riddims.

Along with its digital release, the OOF! EP will also be pressed into a limited-edition run of 808 CDs which will be available exclusively from the Blue Scholars’ and other project partners’ websites and at the IN4MATION Ward location in Honolulu, HI. The whole project is part of Blue Scholars’ artist owned label MassLine, underwritten through a strategic marketing partnership with Seattle’s independent coffee company Caffè Vita, distributed digitally by Tunecore, and marketed in collaboration with Duck Down Records.

Everybody loves Hawaii. But does it love you back? Get that OOF! EP and find out.

FELT 3 Free Download and News Update

Alright so everyone is still wondering what the new FELT 3 album is going to be called or additional emcee or producer. I've done some research and this is what I have come up with thus far.

There's not a third emcee it's going to be a producer. They have ruled out Just Blaze and Dj Muggs (who it originally was) on Strange Famous' website. First album was Eligh, 2nd was Ant. The Rhymesayer's website/Facebook/ and Youtube ch.s have hints. Some person on Wikipedia has guessed its RZA and the tribute is to Rosie Perez. I don't think its RZA, but it is possible given that Murs and RZA were on a tour together. Probably someone like Blueprint, also a total guess. Prince Paul and Madlib are other popular guesses right now, but both seem unlikely. It's Aesop Rock.

Here's the new song called Protagonists and heres the free download ( right click save as) or listen right HERE.

Nike SB - Today Was a Good Day - Extended Version and X Games

Even though this isn't underground hip hop it has that old school hip hop vibe and you know you can't go wrong with that. I also put this up, because the X Games were ridiculous and I think underground hip hop has a big influence on X Games athletes.

This video is Featuring Paul Rodriguez, Ice Cube, Kobe Bryant & Eric Koston.
